Nine Types of Intelligence

3. Spatial intelligence (image smart)

4. Musical intelligence (music smart)

5. Kinesthetic intelligence (body smart)

6. Interpersonal intelligence (people smart)

7. Intrapersonal intelligence (self smart)

8. Naturalist intelligence (nature smart)

9. Existential intelligence (idea smart)

Very few people are talented in all nine domains. This is probably by design, since a group of individuals with complementary abilities makes a more powerful unit than one in which all have the same strengths and limitations.

But while people have successful careers using each of these learning styles, most schools and aptitude testing focus only on linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligence—a very narrow and exclusionary definition of intelligence. Further, most schools still only celebrate children who perform well in commonly appreciated intelligences (as demonstrated through athletic ability or good grades).

Schools also often promote competition over cooperation: The majority of games and athletics separate kids into “winners” and “losers.” Scores of kids whose strengths are not immediately apparent feel left out. Many end up hating school. Some, as we’ve seen earlier, take the message of “loser” to heart and become reclusive and self-loathing. Others turn to bullying in a misguided attempt to show their strength.

Ultimately, each child has a unique mix of abilities. But regardless of natural variations and limitations in how they learn, all children have strengths and resilience. All children have brains designed to solve problems, in school as in life.
